Designing sustainable and adaptive volunteering: Leveraging leadership, supportive cultures and technology for volunteer wellbeing
Drawing on initiatives underway at DFES, the paper highlights the Volunteer Sustainability Strategy 2023-2026 - A Vital Future, which is deliberately framed around supporting volunteer wellbeing across the full lifecycle of engagement - from entry and development through to transition and retention. This approach reflects growing evidence that volunteering can be protective and beneficial for mental health when volunteer involvement is purposeful, supported and socially connected. Early insights from DFES’ first year volunteer surveys reinforce this premise, with 35% of respondents reporting improvements in mental health associated with their volunteering experience. Together, these findings underscore the importance of embedding meaningful roles and proactive supports from the outset.
The presentation examines how locally led mentoring programs within brigades, groups and units support younger volunteers to transition into adult and leadership roles, building confidence, capability and a sense of belonging. It also explores the value of offering diverse roles across ages, abilities and life stages, enabling volunteers to adapt their contribution over time.
The ""Many Voices, One Team"" initiative illustrates how inclusive engagement and cultural reform can strengthen trust, representation and shared identity across a diverse volunteer workforce. Complementing this, DFES' Volunteer Hub demonstrates how technology can reduce friction and enhance the volunteer experience. Designed with volunteers for volunteers, the mobile responsive, accessible platform centralises essential information and resources, while enabling volunteers to view service, awards and incident history - reinforcing recognition, transparency and connection to purpose.
Collectively, these initiatives demonstrate how aligning leadership, supportive cultures and digital capability creates sustainable, adaptive volunteering pathways that improve wellbeing and emergency service capability.
