Mega warehouses, mega consequences: Complex fire protection considerations and the importance of pre-incident planning
Large, isolated distribution buildings are changing the fire risk equation. This session unpacks why “bigger” is not just “more of the same”: Mega warehousing often means higher density of storage, automation and robotics, complex fire protection systems, longer travel paths and limited access points that can delay manual intervention and result in significant damage when protection is compromised. We will walk through the current trends in warehouse automation and proven fire protection technology and emergency response strategies that can be effective at achieving final extinguishment. We will discuss case studies where warehouse fires went wrong highlighting conditions that allowed a manageable incident to escalate into a major loss and discuss the benefits on having a pre-incident response plan that outlines what emergency responders need to know on arrival, how to locate and confirm the correct sprinkler and fire pump controls, and how incident command decisions about water flow (including when, and by whom, sprinklers are shut down) can strongly influence the outcome.
