Leading with integrity: Embedding child safety as a core leadership responsibility

19 Aug 2026
AFAC | Meeting Room 218
Child safety is often reduced to compliance with working with children checks, rather than recognised as a cultural and strategic priority. In fire and emergency services, where engagement with children occurs through response, education, and community programs, safeguarding must be embedded as a leadership responsibility - driven by integrity, accountability, and proactive prevention.

FRV is at the beginning of its journey to embed child safety as a core leadership responsibility. This presentation will share insights from our early steps, highlighting practical strategies and lessons that can help other organisations strengthen their own approach. We will explore how integrating child safety principles into organisational values and governance frameworks strengthens trust, reinforces ethical decision-making, and positions leaders as champions of community protection.

Delegates will gain practical strategies to:

* Embed child safety into organisational values, leadership behaviours, and decision-making processes.
* Apply risk management approaches that uphold transparency and accountability.
* Empower teams to act with confidence and integrity when addressing child safety concerns.
