Before the strike: predicting and preventing lightning-caused bushfires
Australia and Canada share a familiar challenge: vast, fire-prone landscapes where lightning-caused ignitions are a recurring problem, and where suppression alone is becoming harder to sustain. In both countries, attention is shifting toward proactive measures to prevent catastrophic fires. This talk introduces Skyward Wildfire Technologies' work across two related streams. The first stream is lightning and lightning-ignited fire risk forecasting, which aims to provide operational lead time on high-risk storm cells. The second is a technology intended to reduce the probability of high risk cloud-to-ground lightning strikes, before ignitions occur. The session will explore what these tools might mean for the bushfire community, and for a prevention-first conversation gaining ground globally.
