Lessons in resilience: Organisational and community adaptation in Melbourne's West (2019–2025)

19 Aug 2026
Australian Disaster Resilience Conference | Meeting Room 213
What do we learn when we listen deeply to the practice wisdom of community services, health providers and local government from Melbourne's west on how these organisations adapted their services and operations during disasters and extreme weather events?

Through case study research, the Centre for Just Places examined responses to events including flooding, extreme heat, and pandemic between 2019 and 2025. The case studies detail how organisational knowledge, social infrastructure, and other capital assets shaped effective responses, generating insights that inform place based climate adaptation and community resilience strategies. A foundational literature review further synthesised local evaluations, inquiries, and reviews to deepen and contextualise the findings.

Narratives of resilience and successful local action are essential to strengthening community adaptation to climate change. This project addresses a critical gap in understanding how communities and institutions in Melbourne's west respond in practice to compounding climate-related hazards, offering evidence informed recommendations for strengthening justice-centred approaches to climate and disaster resilience.
