The relationship between stress and fatigue: Implications for performance and recovery

Firefighting is a safety critical occupation characterised by high physical demand, unpredictable workloads, exposure to heat and hazardous environments, and sustained cognitive load. Research consistently shows that firefighters experience significant physiological and psychological stress, with acute and chronic fatigue emerging from shift work, heat exposure, sleep disruption, and cumulative operational load. As with other high risk roles, these stressors interact to elevate allostatic load — the cumulative “wear and tear” on the body — which can influence long term health and day to day performance. This presentation will synthesise findings from firefighter field studies and controlled research examining workload, heat strain, sleep loss, and cognitive performance. Evidence shows that stress and fatigue impair attention, decision making, reaction time, situational awareness, and risk perception — often before individuals recognise performance decline. These effects are amplified during night operations, extended shifts, and repeated exposures with insufficient recovery. The session will conclude with practical recovery considerations relevant to fire agencies: managing cumulative load across rosters, protecting sleep opportunities, recognising early signs of maladaptation, and using simple subjective measures to monitor fatigue. These principles support safer, more sustainable performance and operational readiness in firefighting contexts.
