Transformational leadership for impact: Governance, integrity and inclusion in action
Drawing on the lived experience of Girls on Fire, Board members Carlene York and Wayne Phillips share how principled, values-driven leadership has influenced the organisation’s strategic direction, culture and credibility. Working alongside CEO Bronnie Mackintosh, they reflect on the deliberate choices, ethical frameworks and inclusive practices that have enabled Girls on Fire to empower underrepresented voices, foster innovation and build trust with communities, partners and frontline agencies.
This session will examine how integrity-based governance can move beyond compliance to become a catalyst for impact — embedding equity and inclusion into decision-making, risk management and organisational growth. Through real-world examples, Carlene and Wayne will highlight how boards and senior leaders can create environments where people feel safe to contribute, collaborate and challenge the status quo, even in high-risk and traditionally hierarchical sectors.
The presentation will also explore leadership in the face of adversity: navigating resistance, balancing accountability with courage, and leading cultural change across complex systems. Attendees will gain practical insights into how ethical leadership at every level — from boardrooms to frontline programs — can strengthen community confidence, support workforce sustainability and better prepare organisations to meet the evolving needs of the communities they serve.
This session is an invitation to rethink leadership not as authority, but as influence — and to consider how inclusive, values-led governance can help shape a more resilient, trusted and future-ready emergency management sector.
