About Stephen Sutton
Stephen (Steve) Sutton was a career public servant whose last role was Director of Bushfires NT. This small fire and emergency management organisation is tasked with reducing the impact of wildfires across 1/6th of the continent as well as providing support to communities impacted upon by other natural hazards such as floods and cyclones. One common feature observed in all areas of natural hazard emergency management is the persistent human failure to prepare. The intransigence of this behaviour led Steve to enrol in a PhD exploring why people don’t prepare for disasters and how this behaviour might be changed. His research into the "Cultural Drivers of Disaster Risk Reduction Behaviour" has implications for Australian disaster preparation and risk communication, where natural hazards remain a persistent risk.
