Driven by lower-cost, high-capability models, powered ascenders are rapidly transitioning from niche gear to standard industrial and rescue use. This session explores the development of structured safety frameworks governing their application. It focuses on how traditional rescue principles—such as dual-rope systems, redundancy and load management—must evolve to mitigate device performance variability, rope compatibility issues and human error.

The Central Victorian Mine Rescue Group is leading an ongoing program of field trials evaluating twin-cylinder open-circuit breathing apparatus for underground mine rescue operations. This presentation explores how evidence gathered through these trials is informing the development of new mutual aid operational procedures, defining operational capability limits, and demonstrating how evidence-based leadership, cross-industry collaboration and continuous improvement are strengthening emergency response capability in high-risk environments.
