Emerging Technology: Electric Vehicle and Lithium-ion incidents
The 2025 Public Safety Workforce Insights Report identified critical operational skills gaps within Fire and Emergency Services in responding to incidents involving emerging technologies, particularly high-powered lithium-ion batteries and electric vehicles (EVs).
As the frequency and complexity of these emergencies continue to increase, there is a growing need to enhance workforce capability, safety, and preparedness.
This project will undertake a targeted Skills Review to identify the emerging skills and knowledge required by frontline, coordination, and management personnel responding to EV and lithium-ion battery incidents.
Building on work undertaken through the National Electric Vehicle Strategy, the project will examine affected job roles, benchmark international training practices, and assess current training package coverage.
Delivered through research, stakeholder engagement, and national consultation, the project will collaborate with Fire and Emergency Services agencies, subject matter experts, government stakeholders, and other Jobs and Skills Councils.
Findings will inform recommendations for updates to the PUA Public Safety Training Package and support a nationally consistent approach to workforce development in this rapidly evolving area.
