Alex Howard has over ten years’ experience working in the field of posttraumatic mental health – as a clinical psychologist, educator and specialist in public health, policy and service development. Alex has worked with disaster-impacted communities, emergency services, and veterans and military personnel, as well the health care and other professionals who support them.
She is a nationally recognised expert focused on developing strong partnerships with industry in order to advance, translate, and implement evidence-based mental health and psychosocial support approaches for high-risk organisations, government, NGOs and communities to prepare and respond to traumatic events, including disasters and large-scale emergencies.
At Phoenix Australia, Alex has led a range of service development and training projects, including an Emergency Service capability building project that was recognised with the Resilient Australia Mental Health and Wellbeing Award. She is also a member of Victorian Emergency Management Psychosocial Service Panel, Research Lead of Mental health and Wellbeing Interventions at the University of Melbourne’s Centre for Disaster Management and Public Safety, and a member of the Asia Pacific Disaster Mental Health Network. She has published in the field of posttraumatic mental health, and has presented her work at national and international conferences.
