About Chris Smith:
Captain Chris Smith CSC PhD RAN is a senior Royal Australian Navy officer with over three decades of service across maritime warfare, naval aviation, operational deployments, and defence diplomacy.
A graduate of the Australian Defence Force Academy, Captain Smith holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Oceanography. He served initially as a Maritime Warfare Officer in the surface fleet before qualifying as an Aviation Warfare Officer and deploying in embarked Seahawk helicopter flights on a number of Navy frigates.
During an exchange posting with the Royal Navy, Captain Smith qualified on the Lynx maritime attack helicopter. His exchange included operational flying in Sierra Leone in support of international peace-making military efforts, and flying combat sorties during the 2003 Iraq conflict. Returning to Australia, he served as an aircrew instructor before
transitioning into senior leadership and international policy roles.
Captain Smith possesses deep regional expertise across the Indo-Pacific, having served in multiple high-profile overseas postings as a Defence Attaché. In recognition of his outstanding performance as Defence Attaché to the Republic of Korea, he was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross in 2024.
He holds a Master of Arts in Strategy and Policy, a Master of Management Studies in Leadership, and a Master of Business, all from the University of New South Wales. Captain Smith was awarded his PhD in International Security by Deakin University in 2024 and is the first Australian graduate of the Royal Thai Armed Forces National Defence College. He is widely recognised for his strategic insight, operational credibility, and extensive military diplomacy experience.
