David Bywater, CSC, MIEAust CPEng, NER, is the Deputy Director for the ADF Aircrew Life Support Management Unit (ALSMU), residing within the Defence Department Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG) located at RAAF Base Edinburgh, South Australia. ALSMU is responsible for the capability planning, acquisition and sustainment of ADF aircrew survival systems fitted across 19 fixed and rotary wing platforms operated by the Australian Army, Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force. The mission for ALSMU is protecting those who protect us, by meeting preparedness requirements for ALSE solutions across training and combat lifecycles.

David is a veteran of the Royal Australian Air Force, having served for over 15 years as an Aerospace Engineering Officer. David has held roles across operational units, integrated product management and military instruction including aircrew life support equipment. In 2020, David was awarded a Conspicuous Service Cross for his contributions to aircrew life support acquisition, sustainment and regulatory reform. Following his full time RAAF career, David has worked as a consultant supporting a complex procurement program within Land 154 Phase 4 to deliver next generation counter IED remote positioning vehicles for the joint force. David later returned to his passion for aircrew systems, joining the Australian Public Service to lead the ALSMU.

David is a Chartered Professional Engineer, holding a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from the University of Technology Sydney, and a Masters in Business from the University of New South Wales. David is married to Melissa and has two children, Hudson and Lincoln. In his spare time, David enjoys competition barbequing with his wife, travel and motorsport.
