David Clancy brings 40 years of experience in the emergency management sector working with the Army Fire Service (Australia), Country Fire Authority (Victoria) and Fire Rescue Victoria. With a significant portion dedicated to operational roles and a strong emphasis on occupational health and safety (OHS). He is academically qualified with a Graduate Diploma in Occupational Hazard Management and a Master of Occupational Health and Safety. Key areas of his professional interest and research include: ‘Decision Making in Complex Environments’: David has explored how decisions are made under challenging and dynamic conditions, particularly within emergency services. ‘Risk Perception in Volunteer Firefighters’: His master’s thesis investigated the factors (covariates) influencing how volunteer firefighters perceive risk, contributing valuable insights into safety management and training in high-risk settings. ‘Neurodivergence in the Fire Service’: In recent years, David has turned his attention to the prevalence and impact of neurodivergence within the fire service. He actively promotes the benefits of including people with diverse perspectives and cognitive profiles in decision-making processes, recognising that this diversity can enhance problem-solving and operational effectiveness. David’s work reflects a commitment to advancing both the safety culture and inclusivity within emergency services, highlighting the value of varied experiences and viewpoints in achieving better health and safety outcomes.
