Gabi Mocatta
Senior Research Fellow in Climate Science Communication,
University of Tasmania
Dr Gabi Mocatta is a climate social scientist who researches climate change responses, including communication and awareness-building about climate-driven hazards. Her work takes place at the site where climate change science, public understanding and collective discourse on climate-driven hazards intersect.
Gabi currently leads or contributes to several projects in the climate-driven hazards space, including a Disaster Ready Fund project ‘A Natural Hazards Atlas for Tasmania’, which is mapping seven climate-driven hazards to 2100, across the island state, and providing extensive science translation to support hazard-resilient planning and decision making. She also contributes to 'Multi-hazard public information and warning platforms for the future’, a project for Natural Hazards Research Australia, which gauges how multi-hazard public information and warning platforms currently contribute to public safety, and explores how future communication innovations and capabilities might enhance this.
Gabi is currently a Natural Hazards Research Australia Career Development Fellow, working on the project 'Exploring the affordances of immersive media technologies for natural hazard communication and resilience building in Australian communities’. This project investigates innovative media pathways for hazard awareness-building. The fellowship has supported recent research visits to the Copenhagen Center for Disaster Research at the University of Copenhagen and the Centre for Interactive Cinema Research at UNSW.
