Kathy Mickan

Senior Project Officer, Disaster Resilience , South Australian Council of Social Service
Kathy Mickan joined SACOSS in 2019 to lead its work on disaster resilience, with focus on people most at risk in emergencies. Her work has centred on building the capacity of the community service sector to understand climate change, disasters and emergency management systems, and to recognise the critical role services play in supporting the wellbeing of staff, clients and communities before, during and after emergencies. Since 2021, Kathy has worked in collaboration with Australian Red Cross, strengthening relationships across the emergency management and community service sectors and supporting shared learning and practice. This collaboration has focused on building mutual understanding, trust and practical capacity to better support people experiencing disadvantage during emergencies. In 2024, Kathy and her Red Cross colleague co-led the statewide consultation and development of South Australia’s People at Increased Risk in Emergencies Framework 2025–2029. The current People at Increased Risk in Emergencies project, funded through the Disaster Ready Fund, is supporting the development of an implementation plan for the Framework. Kathy is passionate about authentic collaboration to build community resilience and ensure climate change and disasters do not further entrench disadvantage and poverty. She is excited that to have many collaborators.
