,
Fire and Rescue NSW
Pete Martin is a Senior Firefighter with Fire and Rescue NSW, currently working as the Lithium-Ion Battery Education Officer. He began firefighting as a CFA volunteer in 1998, before joining FRNSW as a retained firefighter and later moving into the permanent ranks. His career has included work in operational fire stations, FRNSW communications centres, emergency response deployments and previous experience as an emergency department nurse. Pete also holds a Bachelor of Nursing from the University of New England.
Pete has led the development of FRNSW’s lithium-ion battery safety education program, a scalable prevention initiative designed to build community capability around one of the fastest-growing fire safety challenges facing households, schools and workplaces. The program translates incident data, visual evidence, frontline observations and behavioural insights into practical, audience-led education for students, educators and broader community settings.
As a proud father and stepfather to four girls, Pete brings a personal understanding of the need to listen to young people and design safety education that reflects how they actually live, learn and use technology. His approach is collaborative, evidence-informed and grounded in practical risk reduction.
In 2026, Pete received the Commissioner’s Award for Excellence for his leadership in lithium-ion battery education.
