Sabrina Davis

Senior Project Officer , Australian Red Cross
Sabrina Davis’ life was upended during the 2019–2020 Black Summer bushfires, when two-thirds of Kangaroo Island burned and her family lost their home, farm, and livelihood. Having grown up in Germany, where fire meant house fires rather than landscape-scale disasters, Sabrina had been completely unprepared. With two young children and no emergency plan, the fires dismantled not only her sense of safety, but her identity. In the aftermath—compounded by the isolation of COVID 19—Sabrina turned to storytelling as a way to rebuild connection. She founded Humans of Kangaroo Island, a community-led project that amplified local voices and raised nearly $100,000 for local recovery efforts. What began as a creative outlet became a catalyst for purpose. Since then, Sabrina has produced a bushfire recovery documentary and a fundraising book, held a film festival, started volunteering as a Red Cross Disaster Recovery Mentor, co designed the Disaster WISE Communities Learning Network, and contributed to the inaugural Disaster Recovery Almanac. She now works nationally with Australian Red Cross in disaster preparedness and resilience, drawing on her lived experience to help communities prepare before disaster strikes.
