Silkom Powell

Research Officer, Centre of Excellence: young people and disasters
Silkom brings extensive experience in disaster resilience and youth engagement to the Centre for Excellence. With four years as a tutor for 'Disaster Resilient City' at the University of Melbourne and recent work with Community Engagement and Disaster Risk Reduction (CEDRR), Silkom has developed deep insights into climate impacts on communities, particularly young people. Growing up in regional Victoria provided Silkom with firsthand understanding of the intersections in rural settings, informing their strength-based approach that prioritizes voice and agency.

As a qualified teacher, Silkom brings valuable experience in inclusive education and culturally appropriate practices. Their teaching philosophy centres relationship-building, deep listening, and co-design processes that empower young people to lead change. With research experience interrogating climate anxiety among young people, and the disproportionate impacts of disasters on marginalized communities, Silkom is committed to environmental and social justice through their role at the Centre for Excellence.
