Trent Gibson
Trent brings more than 25 years of experience in natural resource management, with a career spanning private industry, Traditional Owner organisations and, more recently, government.
Throughout his career, Trent has had the privilege of learning from and working alongside many of Victoria’s Traditional Owner Groups. He has played a key role in supporting several groups to establish and strengthen their natural resource management teams, helping build capacity and create lasting outcomes for Country and community.
After four years as Operations Manager at DJANDAK (Dja Dja Wurrung Enterprises), Trent joined the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) in 2023, where he now supports the development and expansion of Victoria’s Cultural Burning Program. His work is driven by a deep commitment to ensuring Traditional Owners are recognised and empowered as contemporary land managers, with the authority and opportunity to care for Country in accordance with their cultural responsibilities and knowledge systems.
Passionate about creating meaningful change, Trent works within government to help remove systemic barriers and enable Traditional Owners to lead fire management practices grounded in culture, connection and generations of expertise.
Today, Trent is part of a dedicated team of First Nations professionals who continually challenge and improve DEECA’s systems, policies and practices. Together, they are creating pathways for Traditional Owners to exercise their rights, responsibilities and leadership in caring for Country, ensuring cultural knowledge and land management go hand in hand for future generations.
