Zena Armstrong

Festival Director, Cobargo Folk Festival

"With an extensive background in media and diplomacy and a life long engagement in music and the arts, Zena Armstrong uses those accumulated experiences to help build community capacity and wellbeing in a regional area of Australia. As Director of the award-winning Cobargo Folk Festival, she turns creative expression, volunteerism and sustainable action into a shared community practice that strengthens the fabric of community life.

After the devastating 2019/2020 fires, she led the Cobargo Community Bushfire Recovery Fund, mobilising volunteers and resources to support regional recovery and regeneration.

Her foundation is twenty years as an Australian diplomat, including postings to China and portfolios spanning climate negotiations, international environmental diplomacy, post conflict reconstruction and national security. Her diplomatic career taught her that meaningful relationships, whether between nations or within a community, depend on trust, patience and cultural intelligence. Her community work as a volunteer draws on shared creative practice to grow compassion and understanding at a time when it is sorely needed."
